| Blockenspiel…you know, for kids! Posted: 01 Jul 2008 03:13 AM CDT Bust out the aspirin and put down that toy AK-47 fully automatic machine gun you were thinking about buying Junior for his birthday and think about giving the gift of music. Check out the latest in getting your groove on like a tyke, this ‘AMK’ is a modular sound toy specially designed for preschool children. Kiddies can independently play and combine sounds through plugging these uniquely programmed music blocks. Designed by Berlin based PKNTS, this has my vote for a “minor” hit. Designer: PKNTS Studio [ Video ] In interaction with the computer, single sounds and entire sets can be transferred to sound blocks. The children can independently play and combine the sounds through plugging these blocks. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
| Posted: 01 Jul 2008 02:00 AM CDT I had a few too many glasses of Pinot Gris just the other evening and I swear to Bartles & Jaymes that I envisioned a wine bar that looked similar to this new interior design for “Bella Italia Weine” shop and restaurant located in Stuttgart, Germany, home of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. Conscious to the origins on the original shop that was run out or owner Maria und Lorenzo Patané’s home, this new stand alone shop is highlighted by a ceiling mounted with over 90 different mirrors found on garage sales. The second element is a kind of room in the room. With its large oval table, a large round mirror on a wall with textile covering, a carpet and a bunch of lamps hanging from the ceiling the space appears like a homelike sitting-room. Designed by the team of Gunter Fleitz and Peter Ippolito for Ippolito Fleitz Group, this interior space is bold, without a hint of pretension. Architect: Ippolito Fleitz Group |

It’s a minor improvement and may irk some who prefer a dial but functions aside, it is nice to look at just as a stand-alone piece. Designer: Mikael Silvanto |
| A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That Posted: 30 Jun 2008 04:37 PM CDT Not too long ago while shopping for a credenza, I was torn between wood and metal. I wanted the luxury of wood but the performance of metal made much more sense. Designer Daniel Enoksson has created furniture with both personalities called Pieces. Made from pine, MDF, and steel, these stools and benches play up the contrast between all the materials while maintaining their core functionality. I must have the biggest one for my studio. | Robotic Fish Feeder, Because I’m Too Lazy Posted: 30 Jun 2008 04:16 PM CDT If you’ve got a big pond or lake with fish just swimmingly enjoying life, you may ask yourself why you have to be the one doing all the work. Fish have it made! They just swim and eat. The FIFER robot makes feeding one less item you need to worry about on your day to day tasks. The floating feeder, planter module calculates the density of fish in water. It then dispenses the right amount of food but before doing so, it sends out sounds waves. The shoal soon associates the sound waves with food and before you know it, trained fish! It goes one step further tho. The plant on top serves a purpose by symbiotically growing to represent the health of your fish. A great tool for organic fisherman who need an easy way to farm and monitor their investments. Unfortunately the same technology does not work for humans. Designer: Ran Xiangfei |
| Posted: 30 Jun 2008 04:08 PM CDT Originally commissioned for Valgeir Sigurðsson Greenhouse in Iceland, Icebear is a limited edition fur made from pelt scraps in 10 shades on arctic white. Really? There are that many shades of white? In addition there are also special variations in black, brown and albino (which I thought was white). The entire fur is made from sheepskin scraps, 15 to be exact - normally tossed out. They’re arranged and sewn together to look like a butchers diagrammatic poster identifying different cuts of meat. The product plays with this idea of waste sold as luxury products where the teddy bear appearance wipes the naive comical portrayal of a polar-bear rug, the decorative paragon of man over beast. Look out for it soon packed and ready to ship around the world. Designer: Sruli Recht |
| Posted: 30 Jun 2008 03:22 PM CDT According to a recent press release we obtained, Poland is having an economic up-swing and what better time to launch a brand new entertainment multi-plex space than now. “Multikino” theatres in Warsaw, Poland is being billed as the “most spectacular and stylish CINEMA IN EUROPE!” I have not been to every single theatre in Europe so I will have to take their word for it. Brimming with lush velvet, shiny chrome, rich colors and just screaming bling, this cinematic show stopper was designed by Robert Majkut’s Design Studio. Designer: Robert Majkut The Premiere Hall has an air of splendid theatre and opera auditoria. It features numerous decorative elements, ornaments, and wall lighting details. For convenience, special comfortable seats have been placed in the hall, upholstered with cosy fabrics, and in the VIP-zone they are covered with genuine purple leather. The entire hall, although very modern, alludes by its colour scheme to the tradition of grand theatre and opera auditoria, which is exemplified by an impressive six-metre chandelier made using a state-of-the-art LED technology. Both in the upper part of the Premiere Hall and in the first storey connected to the Premiere Hall, there is a VIP-zone called the 'Velvet Bar'. It includes a distinctive long bar and a separate stage – to be used both for music performances and as a separate bay with mobile seats. For a total convenience, the VIP zone has its own cloakroom and toilets. The monochromatic black and purple interior, walls covered in a quilted plush fabric, mirrors, black stone, and spectacular lighting determine the extraordinary, luxury and stylish climate of the place, which is designed in a special way and takes the reception of film art to the highest global standards. This place aspires to be a meeting venue not just for sophisticated film lovers, but also for the creators and participants of film art. The top level, with a bar and 4 auditoria, is the so-called "35 mm" music club, with a separate DJ booth, a bar and a restaurant zone. It is a place to rest, relax or organise invitation-only events. Its design is different than that of the whole complex. It is strongly illuminated by a giant window and a huge oval skylight in the ceiling. It surrenders to sunlight with its light-coloured, almost white decor, white furniture, sofas and armchairs. This place is special in its dissimilarity to the remaining part of the design, being in opposition to it - a fresh breath. Owing to its functional identity and rearrangement possibilities, it is a perfect place to hold private events, meetings, or – in combination with the auditoria – reviews, private showings, or film marathons. |
