Paki The Hippo Is Eco-Edutainment

Posted: 11 Jul 2008 03:41 PM CDT

Let’s face it, we all care about the environment but managing energy, water, and waste is a challenge in itself. The key is instilling eco-behavior as a part of our everyday routine. That’s where Paki the Hippo comes in.

Designer Paul Berger created Paki as a edutainment way for school kids to learn about energy consumption. With teeth, eyes, ears, nose, and mouth all articulated, Paki aims to teach in an uber cute way instead of staring at boring graphs and topographic charts. The adult generation will not be able to make a direct impact on our problems now so we need to focus on educating our children. Ultimately they will be the ones to bring about a paradigm shift in social ecology.

Silence is Loud

I always kind of liked the old egg-crate design of acoustic dampening you see in recording studios and theaters. But this latest design by Altera Design Studio called “Accustica” may not be everyone’s aesthetic cup of tea but it sure opens up this world to more interpretation from other designers. Corian is moulded for the base layer and upper layers are CorianÆ Bas Reliefed. There is a cavity for lighting bulbs which lightens through the translucent layer of the skin. With some of the drugs flowing through the veins of today’s musicians, I would hope these patterns would do more to inspire them then have them climbing the walls naked screaming to keep the giant crab people from sucking on their eyeballs.

Accustica aims elevation on senses of human inside the room both when the lights are on & off.

Throw and pose

Possibly taking some inspiration from US spy drones being used over Iraq at this very moment finding….. absolutely NO WMDs, this latest design by Hakan Bogazpinar dubbed “Flee” looks like a lot of fun. This compact dandelion seed (seeds with wings) design houses a digital camera that snaps photos at pre-set intervals making for some great conversation starters on your myspace or facebook account. The pictures are snapped and then bluetoothed to your mobile phone for instant gratification. I can already imagine the photos of all my friends posing in horror as if about to be abducted by anal probing inclined aliens.

MMMuummmuummuusssssiiiiiiiiccccc for the deaf

Before I get tons of comments as to the merits(or lack there of) of this design, hear me out. I am all for inspiring designers to help people that are not given the same gifts most of us are born with. The gift of hearing is one of those we all take for granted everyday, and designer Pierre-Antoine Bouzard is contributing his part to help the deaf of the world share and “feel” the gift of music. His headphone design called “Shake-Up!” is intended to use vibration to basically pound the crap out of deaf people’s heads. I would imagine that would feel like strapping a vibrator to one’s head.. not that I have ever done that with girlfriend’s purple one while she is at work and I am bored off my butt… I digress. Mr. Bouzard, I commend you on your nice intention.

I Heart Light Way

Strange as this may sound but those baseboard light rails that illuminate darkened movie theaters intrigue me. I always look down, in part to make sure my feet are stepping on something stable and to follow the lights. I mean that’s what they’re there for right? Light Way, a fiber optic baseboard lighting system, designed by Industrial Designers Hayley Rosen, Dan Tafe, Dan Fichter and Fashion Merchandiser, Keshia Stole is your ticket to a home or office installation

Light Way adds light to offices and residences where lighting wouldn’t normally be found or permitted by building codes. It is a good solution for people who want to have light in a less frequently used area of a home or building without having to leave the ceiling lights on all the time. Light Way illuminates as soon as someone enters the space. Motion sensors embedded in the moulding turns on the fiber optic strands within the moulding.

Fiber optics is light conducting rods that can carry light far distances. Light Way uses fiber optic strands to deliver light from a central "light source / generator" to luminares located throughout a space. A typical installation of Light Way places the light generator close to an electric utility and pipes the light to where it is needed, for example a long hallway. Light Way offers an interior designer the ability to sculpt the light in the hallway and provoke an interaction between passersby without having to extensively rewire a space.

Light Way features extruded aluminum moulding. Extrusion allows for manufacturers to make longer lengths and then cut them down to a specified size. Extrusion also helps the durability of the mouldings because it is one continuous piece that houses the fiber optics. The extrusions are powder coated in several finishes including a primer finish.

High-atop My PoeTree

Posted: 10 Jul 2008 01:08 PM CDT

Designer Frédéric Battle (awesome last name) wants us to slow down and enjoy life. His PoeTree concept is a chair you suspend on your favorite tree - the taller the better - and utilizes a system of cables and pulleys to hull you up slowly. The contraption has a 3-point seat belt and nothing on the system harms the tree in any way, unless you plan on going up wildly swinging a chainsaw.

Light Dressing on the side

Posted: 10 Jul 2008 11:11 AM CDT

I have heard of clothing being “too loud” but never “too bright”. Maybe that will all change with “rhyme&reason” by Mary Huang. Her lighted clothing designs are “an exploration in using light as a material to create transformative fashions…when not being worn, the pieces double in function as lamps…” I think everything should double as a lamp when not being used but that is another post entirely. The scarf is made from machine-knit material. The dress is a combination of woven cotton jersey and hand-crocheted flowers and about two dozen bright white LEDs are embedded in each. Dimmer not included but both pieces are interchangeable from battery power to wall power via an included adapter. I just found a new way to turn a girl on….(bad joke, damn you broken delete button!)
