Careful Dr. Who, this Time Machine’s Real

Posted: 09 Jul 2008 04:22 AM CDT

We here at Yanko Design see all manner of interesting concepts, but this is definitely the first serious attempt (from a sane person at least) that we've seen at an actual time machine. Though the laws of physics may be a good reason for the shortage of time machine concepts, those abiding principals did not stop designer Charles Blanca. By studying the link between senses and memories, he believes he has created a time machine and has called it “Madeline.” From here things get complicated, and since no one is more qualified to explain it, here are the designer’s own words.

"So small and discrete molecules though so powerful when we come across them, odours are rooted in our memory and make us travel through time. Madeleine offers to help us find the smells we have lost because of the evolution of our living environment. In a convivial place, everybody will be able to experience a creative immersion in a time-travelling capsule. But more than a product, Madeleine is a community linked by olfactory experience and by the expression of their senses. Let’s wake our sense of smell up and share what inspires us…"

I'm still wondering if I can lock my nemesis in one and make him smell my old gym socks for an hour or two.

FYI: The 411 on 2028 by VW

Let’s see what we can look forward to in the year 2028. Britney’s kids will be readmitted to rehab for the 14th time after getting caught being average and functional. The US is bought by two Chinese business men as a place to keep all their stuff and my girlfriend will still think she looks fat in her 9,763rd pair of jeans. Oh and Volkwagen will be releasing some pretty “safe, comfortable and efficient..” vehicles. Sure, these cars still won’t fly, but they will interact with traffic lights, park automatically and change color with the press of a button. Volkswagen presented this concept exercise into what the future of automobiles may look like in 2028…cast your eyes into their crystal ball and tell us what you think.

The Volkswagen Ego is a sporty two-seater. Our definition of driving fun: a car that doesn’t just fit in with the driver and traffic conditions, but also considers the needs of the environment. It will have multitude of sensors that will permanently scan the vehicle surroundings. In addition to radar sensors, there will also be cameras, laser and ultrasound sensors that supply a specific image of the vehicle surroundings.

The Volkswagen One is the ideal car for people with an active, urban lifestyle. With its flexible chassis design, it fits into every parking space and joins together with other ones to form trains during rush hour that can be steered automatically past every traffic jam.

The Volkswagen Room is a car for the whole family. Contains assistants and a manager to support you. Driving assitance systems, intelligent traffic management systems and expanded navigation software can take over driving for you in a certain situations. For example when you’re on the motorway, the car positions itself automatically in the traffic, plans lane and speed changes jointly with other road users and brakes until stationary in emergencies.

Addicted To Vacuum Sealing

Posted: 08 Jul 2008 06:10 PM CDT

Hello, my name is Long Tran and I’m addicted to vacuum sealing. Yes ever since I saw the Ron Popeil kitchen sealer, I’ve been a vacuum sealing nut. That’s why I’m enthralled with Jongho Nho’s Vacuum Sealer. The whole system comes with varying size plastic containers each with a port to dock the handy sealer to. Push the button and listen to the sound of freshness as all air is sucked out.

Grandma’s Fantasy Come True

I ate so much jello as a kid that I’m now totally sick of it. Even the promise of suspended fruit no longer appeals to me (unless it’s a combination of kiwi in lime jello. mmm mmm good). Nevertheless some people’s distaste for the jiggly gelatin didn’t stop designer David Hingamp from make a giant semi-transparent room in the shape of the ubiquitous jello mold called Jelly Box. You know you totally wanna jump on it!

Clockwork Orange/Pink/Blue/Red…Cafe

Check out the “Majik Café” in Belgrade, Serbia by Karim Rashid. It exploded onto the Serbian nightlife scene in a technicolor jamboree making for one superfly example of 21st century technolust. Featuring super duper nooks and crannies like his and her cutout faces framing the entrance to the DJ Kreemy booth lounge (restroom) area. Austin Powers would be proud to poop in its ultra-chic psychedelic toilet stall. OMG, LOL there is a scrolling LED message board above the bar displays patron's text messages. All in all, I like this place… it’s a sensory orgy filled with Serbs. Now that is a fun night to be had.

Digital artwork made of RGB LED panels surround the bar making the space visible from down the street.

The dynamic patterned glass bar changes color and mood throughout the customer's stay.

Profile mirrors reflect patrons in the restrooms with data resonating form the eyes.

A full-length nude photo marks the bathroom door.
