3-D Braille Map That Talks

Posted: 20 Sep 2010 04:11 AM PDT

The Brainovi is a Braille navigation map that uses a combination of verbal instructions and touch display, to help a blind person travel alone. All he needs to do is 'speak' his destination into the device and wait for a 3-D map to pop-up, giving him a 'feel' of his route. Corresponding verbal directions are relayed to the user via a Bluetooth earpiece, thus guiding him to his destination. The overall effect is to give the user a sense of freedom while traveling alone, without depending upon a companion.

Musical Plants

Posted: 20 Sep 2010 01:37 AM PDT

The Muse musical vase serenades you with sweet harmonies every time you wind it up. Like a music box but instead of a ballerina, it’s your favorite plant. Kind of reminds me of those plastic sunflowers with sunglasses that would dance when the sun hit them. Almost similar but this is much prettier to look at. Look how happy the models are. They are absolutely thrilled with their singing plants.

Should We Watch Out Or Not?

Posted: 20 Sep 2010 01:00 AM PDT

And that is my question to you this Monday Morning. Do you want to be forewarned about a broken-down car with a holographic "Watch Out – Warning Triangle" beaming at you from a distance, when driving? Or do you think it will be a distraction and a hazard? The idea is simple….holographic red triangle projected from a distance, warning you of a stalled car ahead in the lane. Some may argue it being an eerie Potter-esque sign on the freeway; others may call it helpful. Take your pick!

Watch Out – Warning Triangle won an iF Concept Design this year.

Two Wheels for Babies and Breads

Posted: 20 Sep 2010 12:13 AM PDT

Take a look at this bike which sets its sights on the future, one with real competitors to the automobile that sucks the life from the earth every day and night. This is the “Urban Arrow,” a transport bike with electric pedal assistance, aluminum frame, and a box made ofsuper light EPP-material. It’s green, they say it’ll be affordable, it’s comfortable, it’s light enough to lift, and aesthetically, it’s super fresh.

In many parts of the world there are two cars per family of two adults. Urban Arrow aims to replace that second car for inner city usage. There’s a frame that encapsulates the motor and chair, a curved tube around the top of the box protecting the fingers of children riding inside and providing storage room for rain cover poles and a lock or pump.

The electric assist and the smallness of the bike allow you simple and quick access to the city, allowing you to travel with up to 180kg of cargo. In first gear they say you’ll be able to effortlessly climb a hill.

With the lightweight EPP cargo box and an aluminum stiff frame, plus 60mm of high dense foam inside this bike is both safe and relatively lightweight. There’s an optional rain cover, cup holders, grocery net, fixed – yet adjustable – bolt seat post, removable box (transformable into a flat-bed cargo space,) and comfortable balloon tires (which aren’t like balloons of yore – these aren’t as easy to pierce.

The Holding of All Apple

Posted: 20 Sep 2010 12:10 AM PDT

On the now-defunct television comedy series “Kids in the Hall,” actor Dave Foley, playing a bad doctor, said, “There are specialists who have their whole career based on my referrals!” He was making fun of the idea. For Apple, it’s dead serious. Hundreds and thousands of people have made their career of making Apple-compatible products. Some of them aren’t the best, but then there’s those that stand out and do more than justice to the products they accessorize – this is one of em.

The Combine Collective Deluxe Tray. Made to hold your keyboard, your remote, and your trackpad. You know what’d go great with this I bet? This Docking and Storage Base by Yaser Alhamyari. Isn’t it funny how fabulous design compliments fabulous design? High five!

Also you’ll notice that all three items here are Mac wireless interfaces. Combine Collective has several other trays like this, this one being the most comprehensive of the collection. The entirety of the product is sustainably designed and produced, the tray being made of whole and solid-joined hardwoods, water based glue, and a food safe oil finish. The wood is black walnut, sustainably harvested in North America, constructed in Vancouver, Canada by local artists.

Hammerheads Above Us

Posted: 20 Sep 2010 12:03 AM PDT

Inspired by the head of a shovel, (and quote obviously also by the head of a certain fancy looking shark,) this is the modular street lighting system Sphyrna. Designed by FORMBOTEN, that fantastic design team from Hannover, this system is modular not only in its head, but in its height as well. The various lamp heads make this system suitable for the urban lighting of roads, roundabouts (if you’re anywhere that isn’t the USA,) or outdoor shopping malls. And bonus! There’s a fancy seat to go with the system!

You know what else this system reminds me of? Vacuum cleaner heads. The kind where you use the hose to clean inside your couch and such. Modular plugging should be applied everywhere it could be appropriate. Plugging and playing are the two best things about our modern design world!
