| Posted: 23 Mar 2011 07:58 AM PDT Let me tell you about the “kidult” factor – a play off the words kid and adult. It’s a philosophy that encourages play in interactions with objects adults use. The Kinetic Robots look like bronze toys but each one performs a utilitarian function and requires simple action to work. The Lamp has a manually controlled cable winder. The Music Box works by turning the little guy’s arms and the Sharpener has a butterfly winder. Shavings are saved in the lower compartment. They are adorable! | Posted: 23 Mar 2011 07:47 AM PDT The frequent traveler knows having the right accessories can keep a trip from becoming a disaster. Neck pillows are notorious for promising more than they deliver. However something high-tech like the Digital Neck Pillow is worth exploring. Its supposed to be soft and temperature controlled and with gimmicks like an integrated MP3 player and digital sunglasses. Perfect to keep you entertained or lull you to sleep. I want one! Designers: Jung Hwan Song & Joo Young You ---------- |
| Posted: 23 Mar 2011 07:44 AM PDT I had to shop for a new water heater this past weekend because mine decided to go on strike right when I wanted to take a shower. I walked away from the store with tons of new information about water heaters but ultimately concluded they are all seriously fugly. Yes FUGLY! Leave it to Art Lebedev (say it with a Russian accent please) to come up with one that looks sexy and makes water heaters a whole lot easier to operate with electronic controls. The Haier is a line of new water heaters in 50, 80 and 100 liter capacities. All the complicated mechanical controls have been simplified into an easy to use electronic control. Even the simpler, smaller unit consists of nothing more than a dial. And just for design-sake, the tops have “hubcaps” to imitate rippling water. Love! ---------- |
| Posted: 23 Mar 2011 12:02 AM PDT OMG OMG OMG I love these treehouses! Or Treehotel, rather. Located in Harads, Sweden, this unique collection of hotel rooms is sure to bring you back to your childhood days of club-housing and hide-and-go-seek. Nestled high in the woods, there is a room for every personality: the Cabin, Blue Cone, Bird’s Nest, and most intriguing of all, the Mirrorcube (if you can find it). Hat Tip to Welcome Beyond! | Posted: 23 Mar 2011 12:01 AM PDT Great craftsmanship went into making designer Craig Siebeneck’s Idea Bench. The dramatic curves are achieved by cutting Baltic birch plywood into a general figure, laminating layer upon layer, free-hand carving, and hours of sanding and smoothing. Phew! Originally prototyped in bright blue paint, there’s no denying the warm and inviting touch of the hand-rubbed oil finish seen here. Designer: Craig Siebeneck ---------- |
| Posted: 23 Mar 2011 12:01 AM PDT In its history, the fruit bowl has always been a central object of table culture. This “bowl” by Thomas Feichtner is a step beyond the traditional rounded body. The open design stabilizes the fruit in position and keeps surface contact to a minimum. In keeping with traditional Austrian design, the structure is composed of solid silver and contrasts nicely with the texture of any fruit. Designer: Thomas Feichtner ---------- |
