Posted: 24 Mar 2011 08:54 AM PDT The Free Form Ruler enables you to measure the length by “drawing” an invisible line, straight or curved. The unit of measurement is displayed and can be adjusted at the top. What a brilliant idea! Where was this when I was in design school? I studied fashion design and all the straight edge and french rulers in the world probably couldn’t have given me measurements as accurate as this concept proposes. Designer: Monocomplex ----------
Posted: 24 Mar 2011 08:48 AM PDT I'm embarrassed to admit it but I was one of the first people to criticize the concept of cyber cafés and even bet they wouldn't last. To cut the story short, I had to swallow my words and I'm here to make amends. What we have here is the Biz Café – a concept targeted towards the jet-set workaholics who need gadget ready environments even while relaxing with a cup of coffee. Think about it, most restaurants and glitzy places in town have access to our social profile and instantly ping the world with a status update! So yes, in the future we will need a semi-office environment, even in cafés, so that we don't lose out on work! Designers: Youri Hong, Moonhwan Park & Hyoshin Kim [SADI] ----------
Posted: 24 Mar 2011 08:42 AM PDT Have you ever paced up and down a rack of bicycles trying to remember where you locked yours up at? The Acousto Optical Lock is a steel ripe style cable lock that sends out an audio signal and lights up when you press a key fob. Great idea! Designer: Liu Yu ----------
Posted: 24 Mar 2011 08:37 AM PDT Remember the Watch Diary, yes the very one that pointed out your current chores with a bright red pointer and sheepishly reminded you of ones you missed, plus the upcoming ones? Well the hardbound diary has now been upped to a Whiteboard Cutout. You can plan your daily timetable on its face and maybe even attach pictures using the magnet. I prefer this use-and-rub version. What about you? Designed by Wonjune Song for Connect Design ----------
Imaginative Architecture in Natural Seclusion Posted: 24 Mar 2011 12:02 AM PDT This swanky villa has got it goin’ on. Located in Phuket, Thailand, Villa Amanzi combines the best of contemporary design and ultra modern architecture to create a sublime cliffside sanctuary. Built into the granite rock face, Amanzi features panoramic views of the Andaman Sea, an open-plan living area that stretches from the garden entrance to to the infinity pool, and even it’s own mountain stream. This is where modern design meets natural beauty. Designers: Adrian McCarroll, Waiman Cheung, Jamie Jamieson ----------
Posted: 24 Mar 2011 12:01 AM PDT The Pallares chair by designer Carlos Cordoba is the result of a research to develop new materials from natural fibers. Each chair is composed of 3 identical parts cast from a natural fiber tetera and polyester resin composite. The interchangeable parts can snapped together like puzzle pieces for easy assembly, disassembly, and storage. Designer: Carlos Cordoba ----------
Posted: 24 Mar 2011 12:01 AM PDT If your caffeine addiction is anything like mine, you too will appreciate this hybrid coffee maker by VeneriDesign. While I like the idea of single serving capsules that offer different blends that can be mixed up depending on your morning-to-morning craving, I always find that they aren’t as robust as the percolated coffee I usually opt for. The Moka Loca combines the best of both worlds with it’s capsule extractor that adapts to the standard percolator. Designer: Luca Veneri ----------
