| Posted: 19 Apr 2011 07:59 AM PDT We’re back with our second episode and with a new name. Wait for it… the Yanksho! Thanks to Nicole M. for the winning suggestion. She’s won a KOR water vessel and a Ziiiro watch. We also had a runner up so Michael W. will also be receiving a KOR water vessel. Thanks so much to everyone for the suggestions. On this episode, Troy has a bunch of new toys to show off and Long goes off on a tangent about bioengineering and artificial intelligence all while holding a vibrator. YEA… Episode 2: Thanks to Herman Miller BTW we know we need a new camera. Working on it! ---------- |
| Posted: 19 Apr 2011 07:35 AM PDT Scrubbing is a very important factor when cleaning dishes and this has to be done perfecto! There’s no way around it. Keeping this in mind, Domus student Pietro Russomanno designed the KEWA concept, an acronym for Kinetic Efficient Water Appliance. It's basically a dishwasher that uses air pressure to direct water through kinetic jets to create a 'water-blade' that cleans the greasiest of stains. I love its compact, counter-top minimalist design helping it to blend into the kitchen space. However, my only worry is the fate of delicate china but we all know those should always be hand washed anyways. Designer: Pietro Russomanno ---------- |
| Posted: 19 Apr 2011 07:33 AM PDT Here is an amazing concept watch called Stealth Tourbillon, inspired by stealth fighters. Featuring sharp lines and edges, the watch is crafted with titanium alloy. The highlight of the concept is its ability to switch modes from analog to digital. You change functions by rotating the face dial. Switching to the Dual Time module shifts the focus to the different time zones. In the Digital Module the user can set the date and alarm and access many other functions like compass and pressure meter. Wu explains, "To control the digital module, the capacitive touch sensed buttons inside the four directional arrows on the bezel are used to select the option efficiently, which is activated on digital mode." | People Get Around Like the Fatties in WALL-E Posted: 19 Apr 2011 07:31 AM PDT I’m dying over this concept called the Supple. It’s an electrically powered chair driven by a spherical wheel so you can move in any direction and turn on a dime. It’s wireless enabled using a communication system called AGV or automatic guide vehicle. Just tell it where you want to go on the map and it figures the rest out. They can even be linked to ride tandem. HOLLA! Listen, I saw WALL-E. At the risk of becoming some lazy oaf, I’d love to ride around in one of these babies – napping all the way to the grocery store. | Posted: 19 Apr 2011 07:23 AM PDT If Samsung decided to dip its toe into the portable gaming market, would it look like the HD3 concept? Although it looks very similar to another portable currently out, it’s a completely different beast packed with enough technology to make one’s head spin. The OS driving this technology is Android (of course). I like the highfalutin specs but you should never let technology drive innovation. In that sense, this seems more like a fanboi’s pipe dream about the ultimate gaming machine. Hit the jump for the full specs.

| Posted: 19 Apr 2011 12:02 AM PDT When an accidental fire wiped out the greater part of this Parisian loft, the owner of 10 years didn’t get down… he got inspired. Designer Frederic Flanquart accepted the challenge of redefining what was left of the existing elements into what you see now: a creative, open, and inviting space. While the lines are sometimes geometrically irregular, the utilization of natural light is anything but random, and each, in their own respect, helps highlight every detail of the loft. | Posted: 19 Apr 2011 12:01 AM PDT This year, Milanese design fair Salone De Mobile turned 50 years young, & to celebrate, Ezri Tarazi & the d-Vision Group looked 50 years to the future to waves of a frequency currently undiscovered by man. This frequency, as they imagine it, is called the “ultra-gamma ray.” The five giant lighting structures represent the ray & change in hue & light intensity via the central station. Sure it’s whimsical, but it’s also a profound reminder that we’ve only just scratched the surface of possibility. Designers: Ezri Tarazi & the d-Vision Group ---------- |
| Posted: 19 Apr 2011 12:01 AM PDT There’s not a whole lot to the Mecacocoon by Wuithier Gael… and that exactly what I like about it. This visit on the pendant adopts contemporary form using ecological material. The simple structure acts as a slitted border that showcases the light source within the space, as well as it’s sunburst shadow effect. Designer: Wuithier Gael ---------- |
| Volvo Unveils Concept Universe Car Posted: 18 Apr 2011 06:00 PM PDT Today, at the Shanghai Auto Show, Volvo Cars visualises a masterpiece of Scandinavian design, inspired by Chinese philosophy. Concept Universe is Volvo's most luxurious creation ever, and the brand's answer to the question: "What is a beautiful car?" With this sculptural and luminary design study, Volvo wants to test a possible new design direction for the brand since it was acquired by Geely.
With Volvo's new tie to China in mind, the design director brought a more philosophical dimension to the design, as he wished for a car "with the depth of the universe and just as welcoming as the sun rising over a calm ocean." This extraordinary brief brought about unexpected and inspiring discussions among the designers, and the director got what he wished for. The depth of the grill, with its layered design, luminary effects and planetary feel, resembles the universe, while an illumination bar between the tail lights reflect the colour spectra of the sun and the moon rising. Made of rubber compounds, the frosted tail lights accentuate a glowing, almost burning red light. The lights are with its silicone-like attributes also resistant to bumps and scratches. At the same time as the Concept Universe opens the door into Volvo's future, the design team found inspiration in Volvo's iconic models of the past, such as the Volvo Amazon and Volvo PV 444. This is especially apparent in the concept's smooth, rounded and soft lines. The inspirational pictures are to be found in Jonathan Disley's design blog. The aniline leather seats are tailored with utmost craftsmanship, with backrests made from first-class wool, usually found only in the most exclusive suits. Open the pockets and notice the extraordinary stitchery and the lining fabric in a strong accent colour, showcasing Volvo's attention to detail. The centre stack and panels are made in walnut with fine details in hand-painted china, giving a nod to Volvo's new owner and the age-old trade tradition between Sweden and China. There is a growing appreciation for the ingenious blend of design and technology among luxury car buyers, and Concept Universe offers a fascinating contrast between traditional craftsmanship and highly advanced features. The driver's in-command environment has intuitive controls and a touch-screen that approaches the hand when the driver reaches towards it. There is also a full-colour 3D head-up display, originally developed for military aviation, presenting the speedometer, navigation system and other important information directly on the windshield, without requiring the driver to look away from his or her viewpoint.
