We Officially Launch CKIE.COM

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 09:00 AM PDT

One of the great joys of writing for YD is the opportunity to see how designers envisage the future. Your ideas, concepts and even comments piece together a tapestry rich in optimism but one of the most commonly asked questions are “where can I buy it?” Because of your enthusiasm for design, I want to officially announce the launch of CKIE.COM, a new way to empower you to pioneer innovation.

Explore your CKIE

It all started with a name – one that exemplifies and encapsulates everything that makes a creative idea successful. We stumbled on an obscure mathematical equation by a group of think tanks; CKIE – the formula for creativity.

C (creativity) is a function of K (knowledge), I (imagination) and E (evaluation).

CKIE is a wonderful platform we built from the ground up to get ideas off conceptual papers and into the hands of consumers. This is crowd funding tailored for the designer and design enthusiast alike. It’s global, open to everyone in the world. Design is international. It’s not unique to any one region in the world. Big or small, it doesn’t matter if you’re an independent designer. We here at YD have always supported the independents and CKIE is no different. This is an opportunity for you to retain creative control by empowering you to reach for your goals.

With CKIE you get a Dedicated Account Manager, someone who supports and makes sure your project has a compelling story. You won’t ever be alone because someone is always there to help bring your concept to reality. Goods ideas deserve to be spread and with the help of Yanko Design’s broad audience, we’ll spotlight your project right here, accessible by the millions of readers who follow Yanko Design.

What are you waiting for? Explore your CKIE (seeky).

Creating Desk Unity

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Nothing like a really neat desk, exuding positive vibes thanks to its clutter-free look. One of the best ways to organize this look is with the Buro, a sleek block of objects commonly found on the desk, stacked together in a coherent fashion. The block includes items like staplers, hole-punches and calculators, all streamlined and classy! Do want one NOW!

Buro is available in three-color gradients – green, grey and purple.

Materials: ABS plastic with a rubberized finish.

Designers: Adrian Wright & Jeremy Wright for Lexon

Bench Tweets

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 07:58 AM PDT

Kudos to the British Royalty for recognizing the potential of social media! Gizmodo's Kat Hannaford reports that invitees have been encouraged to report the event live via Twitter and mobile uploads! This brings me to the project at hand called TweetingSeat, an exploration into the potential for connecting physical and digital communities.

What this means is that the bench is an interactive medium that records the users behavior whist he/she sits on the bench, happily tweeting to their followers. It has two cameras; one camera is located on the bench looking at the surrounding space, and another is located nearby looking at the people who use it. Both these cameras capture the proceedings and stream it live to the twitter page. Big Brother enough for ya?

Stay Connected by Broadcasting Color

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 07:55 AM PDT

The LightSync is a device designed to reinforce connections between remote team members working on the same project. Instead of bombarding each other with emails and phone calls, simply roll the LightSync to broadcast a color – symbiotic of how you feel. The ambiguous nature of LightSync creates a general connection to the team rather than the individual.

The mechanics are simple; cast from resin with a cast silicone rubber base and laser cut details – powered by an Arduino Mini microcontroller using an accelerometer to control the output of a high power RGB LED, with a wireless connection.

More information about the development of LightSync can be found on the designers website.

Stretch Bench

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 07:46 AM PDT

The Stretch Bench by designer Tak Euy Sung is an exercise in molded birch plywood to the extreme. I regularly associate this style with the great Danish classics and of course Charles and Ray Eames but this design feels distinct. There are 17 layers of plywood carefully bent to create a continuous flow across the surface, only meeting at the corners to create a solid structure. So beautiful.

I Heart These Lamps

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 12:01 AM PDT

Gotta love these Alessandro Marelli lamps. The laboratory flask-like base of the Gost lamp is the spotlight of this design. It’s like a chemistry experiment that yielded the perfect desktop glow. –  Linked tubular sections of water pipe make up the base & column of the Tubolar Bell lamp for easy modification from tall floor lamp to directional table lamp. Industrial & minimal, these light objects leave little to be desired.

Clip Chair, Clamp Table

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 12:01 AM PDT

Presented by De Vorm at this years Salone de Mobile in Milan, these designs incorporate the best in environmental friendliness & functional simplicity. The Clip Chair is a solid & refined design that incorporates it’s attachment components as a distinct feature that contrast directly with it’s wooden elements. The flat-pack Clamp Table features legs threaded into a simple metal clamp that can be mixed-&-matched with a favorite table top transforming any flat surface into a functional workspace.

Living with Spiders

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 12:01 AM PDT

Unfortunately, having eight legs, fangs & a face that isn't very attractive doesn’t usually win spiders any favors. Call me crazy but I love ‘em & to this day have never killed one. In fact, they’re the only thing I am superstitious about. The Co-Habitation planter incorporates a hollow space fit with an LED light that attracts insects to help these little guys to do their job killing. It’s a natural bug zapper, if you will. For gardeners who know that spiders deserve a place, if not in your heart, in your planter.
