Alarm Everywhere

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 08:55 AM PDT

The Cicadidae Click is an interesting concept. It functions as a traditional alarm clock named after one of the most annoying families of insects (IMHO), but has a tiny bluetooth dongle with a 3.5 mini jack. Plug it into anything with a 3.5 mm plug with speakers and you could get some really amplified sound when it goes off. Talk about being JOLTED awake! Would anyone use anything like this?.

Clean Babies

The Gloob project is a children's bathtub that fits in perfectly with today's bathrooms and can be used in a variety of ways. Use it as a traditional tub and changing table. Stand it on its pedestal or go low and sit it on the floor. I love the design but the stand does look like it could wobble. BTW, clean babies are the best kind. Just sayin’.

Compact Cooking

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 04:17 AM PDT

Dreaming of a decent kitchen in student quarters is like an irrational fantasy! Addressing this need to be able to whip up a decent meal, even though you lack the space, is this Cookease. It is a compact integrated cooking system, which contains a heater and 2 bowls. The heater works on magnetic induction and is made from silicone, while the bowls are color coated stainless steel. Much like a compact lunchbox, I'd much rather have a small setup than none.

Untangled Tangles

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 03:56 AM PDT

The easy way out to combing my daughter's hair is to simply snip it short. But the girl likes her lustrous mane long and in two tight braids for school! The 2way comb should end my struggle for taming her tangles. It allows the user to clasp and comb entangled hair, using several locking positions. Easy on the wrist and made from wood, this comb is simply awesome!

Mass Production Gets Personal

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 12:02 AM PDT

Mass manufacturing doesn’t mean that products must sacrifice variation & individuality. Focusing on this concept, designer Thomas Hunt developed Mea, a line of ceramic tableware that allows users to personalize individual pieces through the use of ceramic additive manufacturing. Upon ordering, users simply input the date, time, location, & a personalized message which is then codified in an attractive & unique pattern onto the exterior of the object. An outstanding gift idea that won’t be soon forgotten.

The user’s direct involvement contributes to the co-creation process with the designer while strengthening the bond between user & object, increasing the emotional value of the product through the investment of time. Each item is presented in it’s own box along with a guide detailing the memory surrounding the design & instructions for deciphering the coded information.

Purposefully Incomplete

Sara Roxana Melvinson’s line of product displays has a unique way of engaging the user. The Vivid collection consists of  ”half completed” components, encouraging the utilization of one’s own creativity while simultaneously encouraging the user to become a part of the presentation process.  The table, podium, jewelry tree, and clothes hanger can be customized and adorned with any material to fit the user’s individual aesthetic.

Pictured here the designer has achieved an organic look by scavenging moss, leaves, flowers, and sticks. Endless possibilities provide year-round customization.

Sustainable Mercedes Roadster

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 12:01 AM PDT

Combine modern power with classic Mercedes styling reminiscent of the 1930s Silver Arrow and you’ve got this dynamic electric concept sports car, the latest from designer Ali Khanzadi. The lightweight modern roadster’s body is formed using a composite of recycled plastic & carbon fiber & the chassis a composite of carbon fiber & aluminum. Lacking traditional brakes, it utilizes the same electricity & magnetic system in braking that is used to propel the vehicle.
