| Posted: 20 Jun 2011 08:42 AM PDT A project commissioned by Creative Scotland, Nick Ross and Fraser Reid created a series of unique chairs each altered from a set of identical archetypes. Inspired from evolution and the implication of man's hands. Analogous to domestic selection, these chairs take on new identities. Through this process, a never-ending variety of forms, colors, materials and functions evolve over time. Unlike the design process nature cannot start from a blank canvas but instead must work with what already exists to try and develop improved variants. Everything is a work in progress. | Sterilize and Clean Your Fresh Food Posted: 20 Jun 2011 08:38 AM PDT The other day I went to pick up some dishwashing detergent when I noticed they were selling food detergents now. I’ve always just used water to rinse off my foods but sometimes you need something harsher. The WOW Water Sterilizer uses electrolysis to eliminate harmful bacteria in everything from fruits, veggies, kitchen appliances as well as baby bottles and chew toys – all without chemical detergents. Sign me up. Designer: Sang Keun Sim & Kyowon L&C Design Team ---------- |
Safer Plugs Come With A Switch Posted: 20 Jun 2011 03:49 AM PDT Switch Plug is a redesign of the plug to accommodate a switch and an LED strip. Why? So that we can switch on/off the device right from the plug-head, get a good grip whilst removing the plug and avoid sparks while unhooking it from the socket. The LED is an added bonus reminder, just to ensure that we practice green etiquette. Simple and effective! Designer: Gonglue Jiang ----------
Posted: 20 Jun 2011 03:04 AM PDT In a country obsessed with handwashed clothes, convincing someone to buy a washing machine is quite a feat. Yes Indians can do without machines, we want to scrub our collars and cuffs with plastic bristle brushes and dip our soaks in buckets of water. If only my friends knew about methods like the Wave Wash! The idea is superb for our situation. Stubborn stains need not be brushed off, urtrasound vibrations and little amount of water can do the same job in a jiffy. The device works in sync with the big washing machines and can even control the machine functions remotely. Basically it does this; you have a shirt stained only in one area, so instead of dunking it in the wash, simply run the Wave Machine over the affected area. Its ultrasound and water technology clean up the mess and air-dryer dries it up. Wash the shirt in full-scale at a later date, when it gets real stinky! The idea is to reduce consumption of water, machine load and manual labor of scrubbing. I like it! Wave Wash is one of the 2011 Electrolux Design Lab Finalist. Designer: Kim Min Seok ----------
Posted: 20 Jun 2011 12:03 AM PDT The Zeleritas electric racing concept by designer Willie Tay combines current & future driving technologies with hard styling into a single passenger roadster with a straight-from-the-track feel. A monocoque carbon fiber body, retractable glass hard top, & exposed wheels give it an Indy car edge while modern features like the HUD active matrix windscreen, paramagnetic body paint, & discreet integrated lights enhance both the visual and driving experiences. One of the most attractive racing designs I’ve seen since the Ford Indigo. Designer: Willie Tay ----------
Posted: 20 Jun 2011 12:03 AM PDT Though it’s something I’ve only been able to appreciate in the last year or so, I believe the right shaving kit is a man’s best friend, & can also speak volumes about someone’s personality. Hail Perret is a sexy & stylish kit by designer Niclas Andersson that celebrates the art of the traditional straight razor shave in a minimal yet natural looking roll-up pack stripped down to the bare necessities: razor, lather, bowl, bristle brush, aftershave, & face towel. Perfect for the grooming craftsman or renaissance man. Designer: Niclas Andersson ----------
Posted: 20 Jun 2011 12:01 AM PDT CoCy, the brainchild of Robert Nightingale & Adrian Weidmann, is an ingenious smart-service concept that aims to provide users with free transportation & local, ethical, & sustainable businesses with a creative platform to advertise. The lightweight cycles incorporate a gang of innovative features that make locating, reserving, & operating the bike a super easy process for locals & visitors alike. A great system that also has potential to create revenue for both local organizations & international charities. Bikes are locked into a solar powered bluetooth docking station until the user activates the release via their smartphone or enters an online generated code. Smartphone applications would enable users to locate docking stations rapidly & make reservations in a snap. After use, the user can return the cycle to any docking station which can be geo-located on the bike’s own visual interface. The user then simply slips the bike into the dock, waits for the “click” & walks away. The “blank slate” design & interchangeable advertising unit on each bike gives businesses plenty of room to showcase their advertisements & allows campaigns to change regularly. Additional revenue is created by charging the user a small fee after the first free 30 minutes, ensuring the longevity of the service. Designers: Robert Nightingale & Adrian Weidmann ----------
