| Posted: 12 Jul 2011 08:59 AM PDT Jack in the box was created for the course “Homo Ludens” (trans. The Playing Man) hosted by the School of Arts and Crafts in Gothenburg, Sweden. The goal was to create a playful piece of furniture for the school’s exebition at the Stockholm Furniture Fair. By cranking the handle, a frequent tapping sound will start and the shelfsystem hidden inside the solid body will appear beneath the box. The system contains of three 40x20cm (dubbelkolla) shelves of oak wood. Loving it! Designer: Niclas Andersson ---------- |

| Posted: 12 Jul 2011 03:18 AM PDT SafetyDistance is a solar powered road signs that line the outer edge of the highway. Their presence increases nighttime visibility and ensures road safety. The cylinders detect passing cars via infrared sensors and trigger off the warning lamp. Cars tailing the first are forewarned and can pace their distance accordingly. Depending upon the distance between the two cars, the lamp glows from red (too close) to yellow (close) to green (safe distance), and then ultimately switches off when no cars are around. The idea is to increase road safety via a self-sustainable design. Designer: Da Wei Xing ---------- |
| Posted: 12 Jul 2011 01:55 AM PDT Of all the words in the dictionary, you never associate elegance with Notebooks. But a look at the Split Concept, and I'm sure you will agree with me. Über elegant with a chic cover, the notebook is split into the various components like a tablet screen, independent keyboard, mouse and reading remote pen. All assemble together to become one great notebook or can be used individually. I really dig the sexy styling that Jung Dae Hoon has created. Not many can come up with such tasteful looking devices. The 4800 jigsaw puzzle pieces that make up this table are from a compilation of the Arc de Triomphe, Winnie the Pooh, the Taj Mahal, and a night sky, and serve as familiar fragments that invite us to play and enjoy life despite what we feel may be missing. | Posted: 12 Jul 2011 12:01 AM PDT The Cortina rechargeable heating system by designer Gergő Kassai is perfect for warming a quick bowl of soup. The user simply pours cold soup into the upper container and within minutes has a piping hot meal waiting in the lower portable compartment. Using induction technology, heat is generated directly in the pot opposed to being generated on the stove-top, making for faster and more energy-efficient heating than the traditional stove. Another great feature of this product is that because heat is being generated by an induced electric current, the unit can detect whether cookware is present (or whether its contents have boiled dry) by monitoring how much power is being absorbed. That allows such functions as keeping a pot at minimal boil or automatically turning an element off when cookware is removed from it. Designer: Gergő Kassai ---------- |
| Posted: 12 Jul 2011 12:01 AM PDT Combining the computer world with the natural environment, Omer Deutsch’s design, Secondary Growth, gives insight to what the future fusion of electronics and mother nature might look like. Complete with soil and germinated seeds, the system functions not only as a computer but as a home for the user’s favorite plant, creating an interesting contrast between a constantly changing organism and an unchanging object of permanence. The computer’s exterior was designed not only to resist water but to use it for cooling the internal components. Designer: Omer Deutsch ---------- |
