| New Store Promotes Post Graduate Design Posted: 16 Jun 2011 08:51 AM PDT Itchin’ for something new and different instead of the mass produced stuff on the market? Check out ContemporaryLab, an online store dedicated to promoting the very best post-graduate design. All of the products are unique and most are sustainably produced. The online concept was set up by Emma Brocklesby; an undergraduate, who worried about how she and other undergraduates, could work in design if employment opportunities remained scarce. With this in mind, she took the decision to start up her own business. Smart Girl! Emma says, "I wanted to create an online shop dedicated to promoting post-graduate designers. They are such an important part of the design industry and have the power to create sustainable products to help reduce global warming. Many of ContemporaryLab's products have been designed with this in mind. The word contemporary is no longer simply descriptive; it's a way of thinking." Working with her knowledge of marketing strategies, Emma researches current trends in the homeware and interior design market. She has successfully created a collection of home products that will appeal to buyers of all budgets. | Steampunk Rotary Smartphone in Digital Era! Posted: 16 Jun 2011 03:57 AM PDT Is there space for old school guises in the digital revolution? I think there is, which is why steampunk is alive. Settling the Digital v/s Mechanical dispute with his Rotary Mechanical Smartphone, designer Richard Clarkson gives us a smartphone that is so very tangible that its aura speaks for itself! Stalling the 'digital-take-over', the phone features two interchangeable brass dials, a true rotary dial and a button dial. WHats really clever is that the act of changing these is inspired from changing the lenses on a camera! Electroplated copper with a coat of paint completes the body-job. Meant for the steampunk and minimalistic fans, this phone is sure to favors across the lines. Designer: Richard Clarkson ---------- |
| Posted: 16 Jun 2011 01:51 AM PDT My father never trashes any old batteries because he knows that combined with another used one, a few weeks later, it can juice up the wall clock any such device. I know its not recommended, but bottom line is that people DO it! So if you can't break them, may as well join them; provide them with a Digital Measuring Paper. It features soft OLED screen and paper-thin IC that displays the amount of backup juice in a cell. At least two like-powered batteries can be used together more effectively. | Posted: 16 Jun 2011 01:06 AM PDT One of the biggest advantages of a laptop is its portability feature. Using this as its premise, here is a very sleek version of how we should be really using a digital notebook. Ironic that it's a leaf out of the journal kind, the Anderson's main USP is the practical way of handling the book. Dual hinge system makes it possible to use the notebook in portrait and landscape mode. Realistic and do-able, I'd like one Anderson just for me! Designers: Ma Yiwei and Tao Ying This Fujitsu concept is a part of the Fujitsu Design Award that was organized by Designboom. ---------- |
| Posted: 16 Jun 2011 12:03 AM PDT Inspired by the work of kinetic sculptors Theo Jansen & Reuben Margolin, the Kanagawa Coffee Table is the result of a merge between the warm aesthetic of wood and cold feel of mechanics. The table is constructed of 298 pieces of laser cut Baltic Birch plywood, oak dowels, rubber “o” rings, and conduit that are set into an elegant & complex wave motion with a turn of the hand crank. The clear glass top makes for the perfect window to view the inner workings & measures at 50″x30″, offering plenty of usable space. Designer: William “Alex” Mecker ---------- |
| Posted: 16 Jun 2011 12:01 AM PDT Raise your hand if you think most vacuums and trash cans are ugly! I know I do. Here is yet another unorthodox but clever vacuum design, this time from designer Jocelyn Sie. The Vacbin (if you didn’t gather from the name) is a waste bin/vacuum combination for those who don’t like the obvious look of the conventional trash can and rolling vacuum, which can sometimes be a real eyesore. Hidden within the inconspicuous body of the bin is a hand held vacuum that easily stores and releases for quick tidying up. Another cool features is that the Vacbin’s vacuum component automatically empties itself into the bin after each use. Designer: Jocelyn Sie ---------- |
