No More A Cookbox

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 01:46 AM PDT

Microwaves have always been boxy in design. Just changing their outward appearance isn't innovation enough! The challenge is to come up with a practical design that is radical in features, plus space saving enough to abide by the modern-day kitchen diktats. Innowave is one such approach to out-of-the-box thinking. The microwave has been redesigned to fit in a kitchen like a regular drawer, thus freeing up the work surface.

Features include the mode stirrer, an extremely slow rotating aluminum blade that replaces the regular turntable. The front door is a hollow stainless steel structure, housing the electronics. It includes a magnetic steel switch that turns off the microwave instantly, protecting against accidental opening. The steel handle is attached to borosilicate glass containing the capacitive touch screen for navigation.

Overall I think this a refreshing approach to the tried and tested. What do you think?

Stop That Door!

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 01:29 AM PDT

Hand Door Stopper is a clever way to pull down the doorstopper without having to bend over or using your foot. The stopping mechanism is integrated into the handle itself and is very convenient. Moreover the angle of the door handle will always make you aware that the stopper has been activated. So no accidental door-pushing! Simple and functional, just the way we like it.

Hand Door Stopper is a 2011 Sparks Award winning entry.

Emergency Rescue Bike

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 12:01 AM PDT

Designed for use by the Coast Guard, the Sharpshooter electric bike concept aims to be a viable alternative to the current limited range motorcycles for routine patrols and emergency rescues. For water rescues, the body can be bent and transformed into a lightweight throwing device and the motor can be used as a winch for collecting rope quickly. Aside from being multifunctional, this electric bike is a more environmentally friendly way of patrolling compared to the common motorcycle.

Demolition Robot

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 12:01 AM PDT

As construction methods grow in complexity, so does the need for more sophisticated demolition. Designer S. Dogan Sekercioglu imagines a future shift towards the use of unmanned robotics to reduce risky demolitions, especially those of nuclear plants, chemical factories, and sewars. The Cynomy demolition vehicle incorporates innovative controls and robotic arms that can be fitted with a number of tools to perform various tasks, moving humans out of harms way while providing calculated and precise maneuvers.

The design of the remote control is based on robotic arm control systems, and is operated with both hands, reflecting the operator’s arm movements to the arm movements of Cynomy. Electric motors located within each of the airless tires drive the robot. Synchronized with the electric controller, each can move in opposite directions for tight turns.

Designer Alejandra Castelao gives the traditional birdhouse a total facelift with this unorthodox design, the Nido Birdhouse. Made from ceramic and coated with a lead-free glaze, this geometric, multifaceted home is better shaped to resist the elements, and sports a futuristic feel our feathered friends are sure to appreciate.
